(INTELLIHUB) — The United Nations is set to hold a debate this week on the practical use of and rules regarding the use of fully-autonomous killer robots to potentially roam the battlefield with their own independent wills and skills to kill. However, the push to hold a U.N. sanctioned meeting on the subject comes as a concern to some, as the entire United States has been determined to be a “battlefield” per the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
In fact, PaleoFuture recently reported on the opposition and risk of such technology: Professor Sharkey is an activist with a particular interested in artificial intelligence and robots. Sharkey founded the Campaign Against Killer Robots and, as you can imagine, supports a ban on killer robots.
“Autonomous weapons systems cannot be guaranteed to predictably comply with international law,” Prof Sharkey said to the BBC. “Nations aren’t talking to each other about this, which poses a big risk to humanity.”
The pure thought of an autonomous machine gun turret placed in a strategic location, like the one utilized in the movie Aliens, or a humanoid style hunter-seeker robot with a built-in kill feature as seen in the Terminator movies, is horrific to say the least, but what it they actually existed and were in use. Moreover, imagine the ED-209 or RoboCop himself becoming a common replacement for human police. I mean after all they have holographic receptionists.
If you think about it, the sky is the limit when modern technologies come into play. If you have seen it on a movie or T.V., it likely can or has been done.
Warmongers and proponents of killer robots plan to have them roaming a battlefield near you in the coming future.
